General SonarChart Shading FAQ

Q.  What’s new in the satellite overlay for Platinum+ and HotMaps Platinum charts?

Navionics has developed SonarChart Shading, new imagery based on the depth data within SonarChart, for HotMaps Platinum and Platinum+ cards. In addition to SonarChart Shading, Platinum+ and more than 2,600 lakes HotMaps Platinum lakes will offer updated and optimized high-resolution satellite imagery. Some lakes may have partial coverage.

Q.  What is SonarChart Shading?

Embedded within the satellite overlay content layer, SonarChart Shading provides a detailed rendering of the seafloor and lake bottom to deliver a unique perspective of underwater topography at a glance. Created from the high-definition 1’ contour data within SonarChart, varying shades of blue reveal changes in depth, highlighting channels, drop-offs, and other features that help boaters quickly gain a better situational awareness and offers inland and coastal anglers clear, visual cues to identify fish-holding structure. Visit our blog post for more information on SonarChart Shading: https://www.navionics.com/usa/blog/post/sonarchart-shading-being-added-to-platinum-and-hotmaps-platinum/

Q.  How will this improve my fishing?

Whether fishing a lake that is full of structure, with lots of points, flats and humps, or one that is relatively flat, being able to locate even subtle changes in depth can make a big difference in your success on the water. SonarChart Shading is a visual tool that can help you recognize those changes quickly and make sense of the contour lines that can sometimes clutter up your graph, especially in areas with steep changes in depth. The image makes it clear where the bottom rises and falls, so you can focus on your areas of interest.

Q.  I’m not an angler, how would this feature benefit me?

SonarChart Shading is a visual tool that can help sailors and cruisers quickly analyze a body of water to identify channels and make sense of the contour lines that can sometimes clutter up your plotter screen.

Q.  Is there a way to be notified directly when SonarChart Shading is now available in my coverage area?

You can view the list of U.S. lakes here:
https://www.navionics.com/usa/charts/features/satellite-overlay#mb3-so-scs-coverage

Q.  Why do some areas of satellite overlay look like a patchwork quilt?

Our cartography team hand selects the highest quality satellite imagery tile available. This means the color and clarity may vary from tile to tile because the image was taken at a different time under different physical conditions.

Downloading / Troubleshooting Chart Installer

Q.  How long does it take to upload the Satellite Overlay with SonarChart Shading layer from the Chart Installer?

Due to the large amount of data within the Satellite Overlay with SonarChart Shading content layer, it will likely take several hours to download.

Q.  I’m having trouble downloading and installing the Chart Installer. Where can I find instructions on operating the Chart Installer?

If you are having trouble downloading and installing the Chart Installer, check that your computer’s operating system and internet browser are compatible. https://navionics.secure.force.com/kb/articles/en_US/Knowledge_Article/How-To-Register-And-Update-Your-Chip/

Q.  Will the download process take longer than our previous chart updates?

Yes. Due to the large amount of data within the Satellite Overlay with SonarChart Shading content layer, it will likely take several hours to download, depending on internet speed.

Q.  While updating my chart I got a message stating that my card was full. What can I do?

Some first-generation Platinum cards may have a smaller memory capacity. Please contact help@navionics.com if you receive this message during the download phase.

Q.  Has the download process changed with SonarChart Shading?

Yes.  SonarChart Shading has dependencies on other chart layers (Nautical Chart & SonarChart).  Previously, you could independently select the chart layer(s) you wished to update within the Chart Installer.  That functionality remains; however, if you decide to download SonarChart Shading it is required that you also download all supporting chart layers.

How to View SonarChart Shading

Q.  How do I view SonarChart Shading on my plotter?

After downloading SonarChart Shading to your HotMaps Platinum or Platinum+ card using our online Chart Installer, insert it into your plotter. Since SonarChart Shading is embedded within the satellite overlay, you’ll need to have satellite overlay turned on. We recommend setting the satellite overlay view option to “land and sea”, but it can also be viewed on “sea only.” SonarChart Shading will not display if you select “land only.”

Q.  Can I see SonarChart Shading on my mobile app?

At this time, SonarChart Shading is only available on HotMaps Platinum or Platinum+ cards.

Q.  I’ve downloaded Satellite Overlay with SonarChart Shading and have the satellite overlay set to land and sea at 100%, why can’t I see SonarChart Shading?

At closer zoom levels, SonarChart Shading is replaced by the actual satellite imagery over water, allowing boaters to see a bird’s eye perspective of sandbars, marshes and backwater channels. Try zooming out to a higher zoom level.
